Carolina Koalkiewicz defeated Phyllis Herrig by submission (naked rear throttle), Round 2-4:01 at UFC Vegas 56 on Saturday, June 4, 2022, live from UFC APEX in Las Vegas, Nevada.
“I feel great, I feel amazing… I’m back, I’m back… I’ve changed everything, I’ve changed my whole life,” Kowalkiewicz said.
“It has been an honor to be in the UFC for eight years and to fight for 20 years…I wanted to prove to myself that I could beat two ACL surgeries and fight at the highest level…It’s time to close this chapter of my life,” Herrig said. who left her gloves in the octagon after the fight and announced her retirement.
Both Kowalkiewicz and Herrig came out of their corner in the first round by throwing hard. Both fighters landed strikes in an exciting back-and-forth battle. In the second round, Kowalkiewicz went on to win amazing exchanges, opening a cut under Herrig’s eye. The end came with less than a minute remaining in the second round. Kowalkiewicz took Herrig back and locked up in a naked rear throttle. With submission locked deep under her chin, Herig was forced into submission.
Kowalkiewicz entered Saturday’s fight in a five-way defeat that saw her withdraw from the strawweight classifications. The former title contender has not won a fight since she defeated Herrig at UFC 223 on April 7, 2018. With her victory, Kowalkiewicz must battle against the top 15 fighters in her next fight.
Herrig has entered Las Vegas in a losing streak four times. Due to knee injuries, Herrig has not won a fight since UFC 218 when she defeated Courtney Casey by split decision.
